What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is a very common condition and a third of men will experience symptoms at some point in their lives. It’s important to remember that you’re not alone if you are experiencing issues and that there is support and treatment available that can help improve your personal relationships.

Getting access to the treatment you need is straightforward. Simply complete our online premature ejaculation consultation, then choose your preferred treatment. Our prescriber will review your consultation to ensure you are prescribed the most appropriate medicine to suit your health needs.

What causes premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation can be very frustrating and challenging to manage, characterised by ejaculation with little stimulation or within a short time after starting sexual activity, leading to unsatisfactory sexual experiences.

Medically speaking, the condition is not a cause for concern but it can lead to a drop in confidence levels and lower self-esteem, which can take its toll on both a personal level and on your relationships, as well.

It may be advisable to seek further medical advice if you’re concerned about your sexual performance and feel as though you have little control over your ejaculation.

If your frustration levels are increasing to the point that you’re avoiding being sexually intimate or if you find that you’re ejaculating regularly within two minutes of penetration, it may be worth investigating the root cause of the problem so you can find a suitable treatment.

MENS offers treatment and medication for premature ejaculation, with our service including a confidential online consultation with a UK-based prescriber who will prescribe the appropriate course of treatment based on your medical history and the answers you provide.

There are both psychological and physical factors at play with premature ejaculation, which is why it’s necessary to find the root cause so you can determine the best course of treatment.

Physical causes include genetics, nerve damage, inflammation of the urethra or prostate and changes in hormone levels.

Psychological causes include poor body image, stress, anxiety or depression, sexual anxiety, relationship problems and excessive excitement.

You may also find that you experience symptoms as you get older. While age isn’t necessarily a factor, getting older can lead to changes in both your erections and ejaculation.

What are the symptoms of premature ejaculation?

The main symptom of premature ejaculation is the inability to control ejaculation, either while masturbating or when engaging in sexual activity with a partner.

People with lifelong premature ejaculation experience symptoms almost all the time. Acquired premature ejaculation, meanwhile, develops following previously satisfactory sexual interactions where no ejaculation issues were experienced.

You may also experience variable premature ejaculation, where you have periods of typical sexual activity, followed by periods where rapid ejaculation takes place.

How can premature ejaculation be treated?

There are various treatment options available to you if you are experiencing premature ejaculation. It may be necessary to combine therapy and counselling with medication and/or topical anaesthetics.

Medication includes topical anaesthetic, which can cause a numbing sensation and reduce sensitivity to help delay ejaculation.

Priligy, meanwhile, is an oral medication that works to increase serotonin levels in the body to help delay ejaculation. Such medication can be stringd online following a confidential consultation with a certified prescriber.

Non-medical measures to help manage this condition include using thicker condoms, taking breaks during sex or masturbating a few hours before engaging in sexual activity. Couples therapy can also prove beneficial, if relationship issues are contributing to the problem.
