What is Priligy?

Premature ejaculation is a very common condition and over a third of people will experience symptoms at some point in their lives.

There are psychological and physical causes for premature ejaculation and it can be helpful to identify the underlying cause of the condition so you can find the best course of treatment.

Psychological causes include stress, anxiety and depression, as well as relationship issues and poor body image. Physical causes include genetics, nerve damage, changes in hormone levels and inflammation of the prostate or urethra.

Characterised by ejaculation with little stimulation or shortly after starting sexual activity, premature ejaculation can be very distressing and frustrating to experience, but itโ€™s important to know that youโ€™re not alone and there are various treatment options available to help you regain control.

Priligy is one such form of treatment and it is available here at MENS once youโ€™ve completed a confidential medical questionnaire with our UK-based certified prescriber.

How does Priligy work?

Priligy is an oral medication that works to improve control over erections, delaying ejaculation. It was the first oral treatment for premature ejaculation to be granted a UK licence. It contains the active ingredient dapoxetine, which increases serotonin in the nervous system.

The dapoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and works to increase serotonin levels, which causes a delayed reaction in the parts of the brain responsible for ejaculation and increases the time it takes to reach orgasm.

Research has found that more than 80 per cent of people who take Priligy are able to gain better control over ejaculation.

The medication is currently only licensed in people between the ages of 18 and 64 who have had premature ejaculation issues for at least six months, where they ejaculate within two minutes of penetration.

How to take Priligy

Take one tablet between one and three hours before sex, either with or without food.

It can be helpful to avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication, as this can make some side-effects worse and compromise the efficacy of the treatment.

Never take more than one tablet in a 24-hour period.

Priligy is at its most effective between one and three hours after taking a tablet, but occasionally you may find that the effects are retained for up to 12 hours.

Are there any side-effects to taking Priligy?

As with any medication, there is a risk that you may experience some side-effects. These include:

– Diarrhoea
– Nausea
– Fainting
– Headaches
– Dizziness

Itโ€™s important to remember that Priligy is only a temporary solution and will not provide you with a cure for premature ejaculation. It can be beneficial to identify the root cause of the condition and you may find it helpful to consider counselling and/or therapy alongside medication.

You are able to string Priligy discreetly online here at MENS following a confidential online consultation with our UK-based certified prescriber.
